Just 3.5 hours from Rutherford, Lake Keepit Dam is one of those destinations that quietly exceeds expectations. Nestled in the New England region of New South Wales, it offers the perfect combination of stunning lake views, family-friendly facilities, abundant wildlife and peaceful camping.
We recently spent two nights on an unpowered lakefront site and quickly discovered why so many visitors return time and time again. Whether you’re looking for a romantic couples retreat, a family camping adventure or simply a place to slow down and reconnect with nature, Lake Keepit has something for everyone.

Waking Up to Lakefront Views
There’s something special about opening your caravan door each morning to uninterrupted views across the water. During our stay we were treated to calm lake conditions, stunning sunrises and peaceful evenings watching the changing colours reflect across the water.
The lakefront unpowered sites offer plenty of space and easy access to all of the park’s facilities while still feeling connected to nature.

Campfires and Relaxing Evenings
One of our favourite things about camping is sitting around a campfire at the end of the day, and Lake Keepit doesn’t disappoint.
Campfires are permitted in the unpowered camping and bush camping areas, allowing campers to enjoy a traditional camping experience under the stars. We spent our evenings gathered around the fire overlooking the lake, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and crisp winter air.

Guests staying in the glamping tents and Wilderluxe cabins can also enjoy dedicated communal fire pit areas, while a large communal fire pit is located within the camp kitchen precinct.

Wildlife Encounters
The natural beauty of Lake Keepit extends beyond the water itself.
During our stay we spotted kangaroos grazing throughout the grounds and pelicans relaxing around the lake. Wildlife sightings are a regular part of the experience and add to the peaceful atmosphere of the park.

Fishing, Boating and Outdoor Activities
Lake Keepit is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you enjoy fishing, boating, kayaking or simply relaxing by the water, there is plenty to keep you entertained.
Families can spend the day exploring the lake while children enjoy the playground, BMX track and splash pad.
The wide-open spaces and beautiful scenery make it easy to switch off and enjoy the slower pace of life.
A Day Trip into Gunnedah
While staying at Lake Keepit, we took the opportunity to explore nearby Gunnedah.
Two standout attractions were the impressive Mary McKellar Silo Art and the Battle of Long Tan Water Tank Art. Both are well worth a visit and offer a fascinating glimpse into local history, culture and artistic talent.
