Lightning Ridge to Moree – From Opal Fields to Cotton Fields

After exploring the quirky streets and opal fields of Lightning Ridge, it was time to point the Ranger south towards Moree. The drive is around 240 km and took us approximately three hours towing the caravan, with the landscape gradually changing from rugged opal country to the rich black-soil plains famous for their endless cotton fields.

It was a fascinating drive watching the scenery transform. The unique outback landscape surrounding Lightning Ridge slowly gave way to wide-open farming country, where cotton fields stretched across the horizon. It’s amazing how quickly Australia’s landscapes can change, and it’s one of the things we love most about travelling.

Our destination was Gwydir Thermal Pools & Hot Springs Units and Caravan Park, where we planned to spend a few days doing very little—and it was exactly what we needed.

One of the biggest drawcards here is access to eight different artesian bore pools, each offering a slightly different temperature. Whether you prefer a gentle soak or a hotter therapeutic bath, there’s a pool to suit everyone. The pools range from approximately 29°C to 39°C, making them perfect any time of the day.

We found ourselves moving between the pools depending on how we felt. The cooler pools were ideal during the warmer part of the day, while the hotter pools were incredibly relaxing in the evenings. Spending hours simply soaking under the open sky was the perfect way to unwind after several weeks on the road.

Moree has long been famous for its artesian water, which comes from the Great Artesian Basin deep beneath the earth. Rich in naturally occurring minerals, these thermal waters have attracted visitors for decades seeking relaxation and relief from tired muscles and aching joints. Whether or not you come for the health benefits, there’s no denying how incredibly relaxing it is.

When it came time for lunch, we headed into town and stopped at the Amaroo Tavern, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The meals were generous, reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. It’s a welcoming country pub with friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere.

One feature that really caught our eye was the old Defence Force aircraft sitting proudly beside the tavern. Rather than simply being a display piece, it has been transformed into a unique playground for children, adding plenty of character and making it a fun stop for families.

After lunch we wandered around town before returning to the caravan park for another afternoon of soaking in the warm mineral pools. Sometimes the best days while travelling aren’t about rushing from one attraction to another—they’re about slowing down, relaxing and enjoying where you are.

After the excitement and adventure of Lightning Ridge, Moree provided the perfect opportunity to recharge before continuing our journey.

If you’re travelling through north-west New South Wales, we’d definitely recommend spending a few days here. The combination of relaxing thermal pools, friendly country hospitality and beautiful rural scenery makes Moree a destination well worth adding to your road trip itinerary.
